Dear readers,
It has been almost 10
years I last posted on this blog! Although
not an excuse, motherhood duties among other professional responsibilities
prevented me from writing here. Yes, I am now a mother!!!! Almost 10 years ago I became a mother and six
years ago my younger daughter crowned me as a mom again.
However, today all day long my heart
and my whole self, felt compelled to write again. Today, January 28, 2017 it is
a time of complete confusion. Our emotions are running high. We are under the
command of a new president. This election results were more than surprising to
many, yet it was the voice of some others. It has just been a week and after a
record number of 14 Presidential Executive Orders, our nation seems to be
diversely divided.
But what is at stakes? Why are we all
this emotional? Simple answer. Primary and basic human and civil rights are at
stakes. A so called protecting wall is said to be built to stop unwanted immigrants
from entering the country. Speeding up the access to Dakota and Key Stones
pipelines without respecting a whole community’s well-being. Rushing
environmental reviews to give priority to infrastructure projects, which undermines
our world’s protection. The authorization for deportations and the elimination
of sanctuary cities, which not only will tear apart families but will put more
people in the shadows. These are not all of them but for me this one is the
cherry on top of the cake: the banning of US citizens and US residents native
from seven middle east countries (with whom Mr. Trump does NOT have business
ties, of course). People were detained at airports and put back on planes to
their countries of origin where terror and war were the reason they left in the
first place. In my opinion, this act is plainly inhumane. This act brought
feelings in me that I am certain many people are still feeling. My heart ached.
I could not hold back my tears. I was heartbroken that my body could not
contain the pain. I am a documented, US resident, yet an immigrant. I am “lucky”
to not have been born in any of those seven countries. This is the place I call
home. This is the place where I fulfill my passion as an educator. This is my
own children’s homeland. I cannot imagine the fear every detained person felt.
I can only imagine the fear many undocumented families are feeling now. This
could happen to many people, even to me.
To ME. That’s it!!! It came to me. Because I pictured myself into
that situation I was able to feel those persons’ pain. That is what we need to
do. Let’s remember to love each other as we love ourselves or our loved ones.
It is time to do this more than ever. At times when is harder to love, we need
to love even more. This is why I decided to write. We are all going through a
flow of emotions. We feel anger, despair, fear. It is absolutely normal to feel
those and more. We have the right to feel the way we feel. We are just humans. But,
let’s not let any of those feelings drive us. Let’s not let those feelings be
the boss of us nor speak for us. Let’s let LOVE do that job instead. It is NOW
when we need each other. Let’s act in our own way but always with love, care
and respect. Let’s!!!
Thanks for reading. I hope to
continue writing. This is one of my ways of acting to make this world a better
place for my children, and the children of my children.
Here a couple of quotes I keep in my
desk’s drawer:
"We carry with us, as human beings,
not just the capacity to be kind but the very choice of kindness” Mr. Tushman
“Do all he good you can, by all the
means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the
times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can” John Wesley
Yours truly,

A MÍ.
respeto,
Maribel
