The Beauty of Dual Language

This site is about my personal experiences in the educational field, bilingualism and cultural encountering.

I’m originally from Lima, Peru and have been in bilingual education “forever.” I do believe in the great social and academic advantages of bilingualism. I did all my schooling in Perú (of which I can not be prouder!). Later on I migrated to the United States as an exchange teacher for Lincoln Options Elementary school in Olympia, did my masters in Bilingual and multicultural education at Pacific Oaks University in Seattle and now I am teaching at the bilingual Evergreen elementary school in Shelton, Washington.

Bicultural. To Be or not to Be, that's the question - Ver versión en español abajo

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Holidays and Happy New year 2006 to everyone,
It’s been almost two weeks that I came back from Perú (my country of birth,) and even though I feel sad of leaving my loved ones behind, I am full of energy to continue on my school year with my little students and with the people I love in here as well. I feel very fortunate to have them both! I found Perú “well” (considering our world standards, of course) and I feel that is growing. I don’t want to go in depth into any political, economic or social aspect right now because that is not my purpose in this site. This doesn’t mean I don’t like those topics. I like them a lot!

As a person that doesn’t live in Lima anymore, it seems that family is the only link that will never be broken. They are always there! Yes, I could see my friends but it seems that “time” and “space” count. Being a bicultural person means having two homes, but it also represents fewer experiences together with either group. I love both places but cannot have 100% ownership of both of them. My heart holds them both and I need to try to keep in touch as hard as I can with the people that I am spending less time. Nowadays we can “live” in both places. The technology in communications is helping me to keep this relationship, TV, (news) internet, chat and of course the phone. I want to maintain this connection because I am a bicultural person. I love Perú and The United States. I can give myself in to make of them a better place to live (in peace.)

I guess that what I am trying to say is that if you really consider yourself a bicultural person, challenges are there waiting for you. It’s up to you to keep the tie or to let it loose. I won’t let it go!

Until next time,

Maribel

Bicultural.

¡Me encantan!

¡Yo no quiero perderlo!

Hasta la próxima

Maribel
